I created an elaborate set for a self-portrait.

Behind my head I placed a plywood board painted in a beautiful matte powder blue by clamping it to a ladder.

I'm still extremely pleased with how these have turned out

A portait of me, a white person with blue eyes and brown hair. I'm right in front of a pastel-blue painted sheet of wood suspended using clamps on a an aluminium ladder scaffold. I'm holding a workshop LED light in my left hand, shining onto my face.
Some details I really like: the red details on the joints of the ladder and the handles of the clamps, the soft light on my face while the background is lit much more harshly, the slight highlight on my face from the construction lamp I'm holding in my hand, how the powder blue board provides a natural frame sitting behind me, and the glass of white wine just in view on the left side of the frame.

This photo has served me very well. I use it in many places as my profile picture, and I like that it is somewhat versatile: depending on the extent to which I crop the frame, I can show more about myself, or less.

I can really recommend people take self-portraits, treat it like an artwork, and construct the environment in which they want to be seen. There is something simple but profound about that.
